Abu Dhabi Festival Announces Co-Production of Cherubini's "Medea"
Abu Dhabi Festival unveils its latest co-production with Teatro Real and the Mérida International Classical Theatre Festival. The compelling opera "Medea" by Luigi Cherubini was showcased at the stunning World Heritage Site of the Roman Theatre in Mérida, Spain, on 27 and 29 June.
This new production of Cherubini's tragic and rapturous masterpiece, "Medea," adapted from the classical Greek tragedy, marks a significant collaboration between Teatro Real, Abu Dhabi Festival, and Mérida Festival. The world premiere at the opening of Teatro Real's 2023/2024 season in Madrid was graced by the presence of Their Majesties, the King and Queen of Spain.
Returning to the Mérida International Classical Theatre Festival, this grand production featured the musical direction of Andrés Salado and the Orquesta de Extremadura. The visionary direction and set design by Paco Azorín brought Cherubini’s classic to life. Set in the ancient city of Corinth, the opera explores themes of emotion, revenge, and exile, culminating in the dramatic immolation of Medea—a moment praised by Wagner and immortalized by Maria Callas.

The distinguished creative team includes History & Mythology Consultant Pedro Sáenz Almeida, Costume Designer Ana Garay, Lighting Designer Pedro Yagüe, Audiovisual Designer Pedro Chamizo, and Movement Director Carlos Martos de la Vega. Together, they delivered a visually and emotionally compelling rendition of this timeless tale of passion, betrayal, and revenge.
